Accendo comments on UK innovation: what should earn the next investment?

Asif Rafique responds to the 2026 Innovation State of the Nation report with a practical test for the next stage of product or service investment.

The Innovation State of the Nation 2026 report, published on 7 October, raises a practical question for established businesses developing a new product or service: what evidence should justify the next commitment?

A project review becomes more useful when management can say what the next stage needs to prove.

For a new service, technical delivery may be progressing well while the commercial case remains uncertain. Customers may like the idea but resist the price. Delivery could require more support than expected. The business needs to resolve those questions before committing substantially more time or money.

The Innovation State of the Nation 2026 survey provides context on UK business innovation. Its findings cannot establish the return on an individual project. That requires evidence specific to the proposed service and its customers.

I would define the next commitment around a limited test. Agree the question, the budget and the date of the decision. A paid pilot might establish whether the customer values the offer, while recorded delivery time helps test the margin. Include training and management attention in the assessment, even where they do not create an immediate additional cash payment.

Before the test begins, decide what would justify proceeding and what would lead to a change or a stop. That helps the team interpret mixed results without moving the criteria simply because more work has been invested.

The decision is about the next commitment. A clear record of what has been learned makes that conversation more practical and gives the team a defined purpose for the work ahead.
